Gillian gave a history of Compass, confirming it used to be known as the Multiple Sclerosis Therapy Centre, Lothian, founded in 1984. The rebrand took place in 2022. The centre is based in Leith, at Swanfield. They now support ALL with neurological conditions.
Gillian gave a fascinating insight into Oxygen Therapy (Barochamber) which is “a safe and effective way of improving various neurological symptoms, particularly fatigue, ‘brain fog’, sleep issues, muscle weakness and pain”.
Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation are both offered. These require specialist neurological assessment, and involve hands on treatment. The centre have a range of technology driven innovations for rehabilitation including:

  • Alter G Treadmill: uses anti-gravity technology that supports up to 90% of your bodyweight while you exercise.
  • Molli Suits: this involves electrical stimulation that ‘wakes up’ muscles.
  • GMove Suit: are programmed to compress and release the muscles in the legs.
  • Shockwave Therapy: for some chronic pain, can be used to combat spasticity.

Other services offered at Compass include Nutrition advice, massage, reiki, myofascial release, reflexology, hypnotherapy and nail care.

Case Study: Person with Parkinson’s
Gillian outlined how Compass worked with one of the Branch long-time volunteers and activity leader. They undertook a 6-week programme with 45 minute sessions. It involved an assessment, goal setting and specific focus on posture and function.
Partly due to a prior back injury, compounded by Parkinson’s they had developed a forward flexed position in walking and standing, and was unable to extend fully. Further, breathing was impacted due to the diaphragm not being able to function properly. The AlterG Treadmill outlined above was a great help and the PwP who was at the meeting was very complimentary about the difference it made. Because the technology (developed by NASA) supports so much of your bodyweight, it allowed them to walk more freely. This is hugely beneficial to build confidence, as well as the physical benefits.

If you would like to know more about any of the services or how to register interest in an assessment, please visit the Compass website (linked above).
