There are new opportunities for local PwPs to participate in clinical trials that are starting soon in Edinburgh. Dr Gordon Duncan spoke about these new trials, one of which is the phase 3 Exenatide trial, at a recent Branch get-together. Clinical assessments for PwPs recruited into this trial will take place at the Wellcome Trust Clinical Research Facility (WTCRF) at Western General Hospital. 15 people, the majority were PwPs, went on the visit to the WTCRF. We were greeted by Dr Steve McSwiggan (CRF Deputy Director) who described the clinical research that goes on and took us on a tour of areas where Exenatide trial participants will be assessed, where we met some of the nursing staff involved. We also visited the Genetics lab to see how DNA is extracted from patient samples and sequenced to identify changes in genes that can result in increased risk of developing conditions such as Parkinson’s.
